hi Nathalie, thanks for your publications they are helping me a lot in coping with HSV2. I was(am ) in a relationship for the past one year and seven months, since being diagnosed with HSV 2 my partner is not the same. After doing a blood test i told him of the results he stopped calling as often as he used to. He said he need some time to think things through it has now been three months and he is still distant. hat do you think i should do? Let him go or hang on? I really love this man, it is so hard for me to cope.

Nathalie says: I am not a relationship specialist so it is hard to say. I guess he has to figure it out on his own. You cannot force him to choose you. At some point you will have to be straight-forward and just ask him but in the meanwhile why don’t you take care of yourself? Learn to control herpes instead of it controlling you. Visit a herpes support group so that you start accepting yourself more.

Often people reflect at us things that are happening inside of us. If you’re going through self-acceptance issues (like feeling dirty or shameful) because of herpes, you may need to address these feelings so that this man accepts you. Like I said to one of my girl friends who could not get her long-term boyfriend to propose. “Would you marry yourself?” That got her thinking that maybe she should start learning how to love herself more and their couple is doing better than ever. He has not proposed yet but I’m sure he will at some point. So my advice to you is go out, have fun, exercise, take care of yourself, learn to love and accept yourself. This will make you a magnet for true love. :-)

Hi, am wondering if you have any advice on the DR. Hulda Clarks Zapper, am wondering if my husband and i should try it or is it a waste of money? Also did some reading on Resolve Minerals that claim to detox your body of viruses in 50 days $299. is this worth trying or a scam. Thank you for helping us. Kara

Nathalie says: If you read Hulda Clark herself, you will see that she says that the zapper does not reach beyond the bottom layers of the skin so no I don’t think you need it. I am in shock but it seems that the person behind Resolve Herpes is Kevin Trudeau or at least got inspired by him. I am not sure of course. You can buy his $20 something report instead but I saw the remedies he mentions and I am far from being convinced he has found a cure. Far from it.

1st question: I just had my first outbreak and I am 47. I was told by the doctor at an urgent care unit that I could have been exposed to the herpes virus in my teens and/or college years, is this true as I have been with my husband for 15 years? 2nd question: I was diagnosed with breast cancer, had a mastectomy, and went thru chemo. In addition I am obviously in menopause. You spoke about hormone imbalance can trigger an episode, can the menopause sysmtoms trigger an episode?

      Nathalie Says:

      Q1: Yes it is possible
Q2: I have found that menopause causes herpes to return in many women but chemotherapy might be a cause too. Please do research on Chlorella to see if it might fit your situation.

      Hi Natalie

Thanks so much for making yourself available to help so many people. Hopefully you can help me. I’ve had herpes for 5 years now. I have never been able to shake the first outbreak. I have been miserable and lonely for 5 years and ashamed to even be with someone. I can’t stop kicking myself for having sex with a girl that I wasn’t even attracted to her, just had sex with her because she hadn’t had sex in so long and wanted me yet she never told me she had herpes. Why anybody would knowingly give this to anyone is beyond me. I’m as furious with myself as I am with her. Anyway, I can’t take it. I’ve tried a few things but nothing has kicked this initial outbreak. I have sores or warts on my penis as well as my scrotum. I fear that anything I do will make them spread and this makes matters even worse. I am (was) a very active person: running, biking, hiking, rock climbing all kinds of sports. I have been afraid to do anything in any hot weather or anything that would make me sweat too much down there. I’m so miserable. I would give anything to be normal or at least close to normal again. I’ve even considered killing myself because you see I was a totally healthy guy. No medical problems whatsoever. Very good looking. Always dated beautiful, gorgeous, sexy, intelligent women. Hadn’t found the one yet but knew I would soon. Then this happened and I’ve been alone ever since. Haven’t had sex with anyone and I love sex! It’s killing me. Sex is such a big part of who I am. I love intimacy. I’m so miserable… I’m at the point that I don’t even care what the side effects are of whatever I were to take as long as it would work and I’d be normal again. I don’t know if I can go on living this way. If you can help me you’d be saving my life.

thanks for responding, my question is how do you stop an attack from occurring within the first few days
or at the first sign of prodone symptoms
Can I buy your book via hard copy which I would prefer.
      Thanks Sandy.

      Nathalie says:
The best thing to do is learn your herpes triggers so that you can abort herpes outbreak even before the prodrome stage. I recommend a combination of several strategies during prodrome including diet changes, supplementation, herbal and homeopathic remedies both used internally and externally. It usually aborts all symptoms within a few hours if everything is combined at prodrome stage. If you want to learn how you can do that, I suggest you read more about my herpes treatment program. It does not exist in hard copy though.

I was had my first herpes outbreak 6 days ago and it is horrible. I have painful blisters and lesions in my mouth. I went to the doctor and was prescribed an antiviral medication and also given a gel to put on the sores to numb them so I can brush my teeth and eat. I have been seeing someone for almost a month now and it is going fantastic! I really just don’t know how to tell the person I have herpes. I cannot lose the person because I am starting to care for them. I would also like to know any natural methods that can treat an outbreak of oral herpes and methods to prevent future outbreaks.

      Nathalie says: Hello dear,
Have you considered that your partner might have herpes too and he/she might have given it to you? Also about 80% to 90% of the population has oral herpes. I don’t think your partner would reject 90% of the population. I have written two books on the subject “how to prevent herpes” and I just cannot summarize everything here. I mostly write for people with genital herpes but the solution is virtually the same for oral herpes. It should be a bit “lighter” for people with oral herpes but it seems you have severe symptoms so you should do the full program.

Nathalie Says: Hello Julie. It seems your herpes symptoms are located at a very painful area. Did you doctor mention suppressive therapy to you or did they just gave you some pills to make the symptoms go away faster? If you want to prevent herpes symptoms naturally I suggest you start my program at http://www.herpesantidote.com. If you’re still within your first year after herpes infection, you may want to discuss suppressive therapy with your doctor. I feel it is always better to control your health naturally in the long-run but it’s your choice.

seven months ago I was hospitalized for eight days suffering from the worst imaginable symptoms you could ever fathom. They told me it was herpes and at first I didn’t belive them. There were no blisters to back up their assumptions. They said that they could be on the inside where I couldn’t see them. I swelled up so bad that they had to put a cathiter in me, The skin in and around my vagina started coming off leaving nothing but raw skin. Stuff was oozing out of me this greenish color worse than when I’m on my period then i started bleeding this thick brown blood that looked and felt like snot. They still seemed to belive that it was herpes. It took eight days in the hospital and five days at home to recover. Then last week it started all over again, I went to my doctor and an gyn they sent me to who also said it was probaly herpes but only because his colleage had said so before. I couldn’t describe the pain and nastiness of this. Does this sound anything like normal to you or have you ever heard of anything like this before? I really need some help and I don’t know where to go. I live in a small town and would really love to see a speacilist but don’t know who that would be. I would be eternaly grateful for some help. Thank you for your time.

Nathalie Says: Your symptoms are not really common. I know that some very severe cases exist. However, they usually are most common in people who suffer from an impaired immune system like people with AIDS. If I were you, I would request a herpes PCR test immediately. I would also request a full STD screening plus yeast and candida albicans . These doctors cannot just assume it is herpes and leave you agonizing like that. They can be so full of themselves and disrespectful to women. Find a female gynecologist and rush to ER if necessary. You deserve to be treated with respect and you have the right to demand it. They could have at least given you suppressive therapy.

Also, it may not help much but try and take raw garlic in the morning OR evening for at least 3 weeks. Cut two cloves. Place them on top of a glass of water and swallow quickly. It is not so pleasant an experience but should help you a bit.

In 6 weeks, you will be able to get a blood test. If it is herpes, I suggest you try my new program at http://www.herpesantidote.com at once. You will probably need extra support that I will gladly give you at no extra cost.

is it possible to transmit the virus when the man uses his finger to stimulate and it is not anywhere near where the sore is? Do you actually have to come into contact with the location of the outbreak?

Nathalie Says: theoretically, herpes is mostly transmitted from skin-to-skin contact. It is possible for herpes to be located in several areas of the skin, areas where outbreaks may be present and others with no visible symptoms. That’s why there is a “no sex during outbreak” rule. It is just impossible to be certain herpes will not be located on several spots at the same time.

My husband and I are trying to conceive (I had one successful pregnancy). I have type 1 herpes on my genitals. I had read that because it was type 1 it would probabaly not be very severe, however, for the last 7 years I get an outbreak every 3 months if not more often. I rarely had any outbreaks during pregnancy (I feel it is related to my ovulation). Anyway, we were trying to get pregnant and then a few days later I had a full outbreak. Then a few weeks later I found out I was pregnant, which surprised me because i didn’t think I would because of the bad outbreak. Unfortunately at 7.5 weeks I had a complete miscarriage. My doctor and naturopath say that it is not linked to the herpes outbreak, but a chinese doctor I spoke with and my chiropractor said it may have. Could they be related? 3 weeks later I have another full blown outbreak.
I want to get pregnant but am very scared of having another miscarriage. I want to get the herpes more under control so as not to have an outbreak around the time I am trying to conceive.

      Nathalie Says:
It is hard to say from a distance. I think you may suffer from hormonal imbalance that may have both promoted severe outbreaks and miscarriage. Herpes outbreaks are rarely the symptoms of herpes but rather an unhealthy or weakened immune system.
If I were you, I would try and check my hormonal levels and try and restore them naturally.

Another factor that promotes both severe outbreaks and hormonal imbalance is the presence of yeast and parasites proliferation in the body so you must absolutely get rid of those and maintain an healthy intestinal flora. This blog is not the place to explain to you how to restore hormonal balance but I think that going through a good body detox is a good start.

You can find a man that will cherish you. Many of my readers are women and have found men who have accepted them. It seems to me that your date was either not that much into something serious or needs time to think this over. Texting and calling that much early in the relationship can only draw a man away whether you have herpes or not. Next time you meet a man give him plenty of space and time (up to one month) to make up his mind.

If I were you, I would work on my self esteem and give myself some time before dating again. Give yourself at least 2 months before dating someone else and take the time to relax, take care of yourself and do anything you need to do to feel good about you again. It could be new make-up, hair, wardrobe, visiting a support group, therapy, exercise… and of course you can learn how to flirt and make yourself irresistible in the meantime.

If I remember correctly high estrogen can exacerbate herpes symptom frequency and severity. Any women in their thirties plus can experience some form of hormonal imbalance that can promote herpes outbreaks. Have you considered taking DIM?

      Dear Natalie,
I am a medical professional and I also have herpes. Like you, I have been looking for ways to decrease outbreaks for myself and patients. I was very encouraged to find that a link between pH balance and outbreaks. More specifically, the common denominator between chocolate, caffeine, peanuts, etc. is that they are highly acidic foods, which is to say that the conditions in the body after the metabolism of these foods tends to push the pH of body fluids to the acidic side of the spectrum. I’ve noted that the authors of the books and studies that I have read, (and I have read many!) all say the same thing, which is that viruses, even cancer cells, depend on an acidic environment to reproduce. Likewise, most medications will produce acid conditions, which might explain why many of your readers describe an increase in symptoms during or after treatment with antibiotics. The possible link between menstruation and herpes is that many women binge on chocolate and sugar before and during menses, thus increasing the acidic conditions in the body. I did my own personal experiment and note with joy that as long as I eat an alkaline diet, I am outbreak free. But within 24hours of consuming highly acid foods, such as coffee, energy drinks, colas, sugary foods, I get an outbreak. I slso have had great success with the use of colloidal silver, specifically MESOSILVER, which is the only non-toxic colloidal silver. There’s much more to say about this, but I thought I would share at least this much of my experience and if you’d like more info, such as the name some of the books, etc., I’d be happy to send you the names. I have no financial interest in either the silver or any of the books. I just have found them to be very helpful. Peace and health.

Nathalie Says: I have to agree that an alkaline diet combined with some stress management like meditation, yoga and some brisk walking can do the job. However, I don’t think that most people are ready to make the effort to seriously follow an alkaline diet for the rest of their lives. That’s why I provide information that will help people get rid of outbreaks even if their diet is not perfect.

I’m not saying they can binge on junk food all day and hope for great results but rather that they can make some adjustment to their diet so that they eat more of the healthy alkalizing foods, NOT have perfect diets and still get results.

The relationship between hormones and herpes is more complex that just compulsive chocolate eating. Estrogen dominance can promote chronic yeast overgrowth which can be a major issue…

I am always open to sharing with people so you can contact me any time.

In the last six weeks I have had three outbreaks. Can you help me to understand reasons why this might have happened.

      2. Is chocolate a trigger for outbreaks and why?

Nathalie Says: It is hard to reply to the first question. A sudden change in your immune system is probably the culprit but what caused it I cannot say. Did you experience stress, another disease, hormonal imbalance, a new relationship, a major change in your life..?

Chocolate is a trigger for outbreaks when combined with one or two other triggers. In other words it is possible to eat chocolate with herpes but only when no other triggers are present.

In your response regarding shedding, I notice that the virus travels through the nerve path. As it travels, can it do damage to the nervous system, can it affect longevity, and can it be the underlying cause for one’s death? In other words, can it affect your physiology in such a way that death occurs?

Nathalie Says: Herpes only kills people who do not have or a very weak immune system. Usually it is infants or people with AIDS. As long as you have a normal immune system, you are fine.
Herpes can affect the nerves in such a way that you may experience nerve pain during and in between outbreaks though.

What is shedding? Is it the period during which you are having an outbreak? If there is no sigh of an outbreak, but you are having a discharge, could that be considered an active viral period when it’s possible to spread the virus, and outside of using a condom, how does one stay safe sexually?

      Thank you for your response.

Nathalie Says: Shedding is when the virus travels through the nerve paths onto the skin. It can be symptomatic causing visible symptoms or asymptomatic causing no visible signs. To protect your partner, you can learn to detect when you are shedding and greatly reduce the number of asymptomatic days. When you detect that you are shedding, you should not have sexual contact.
Also it is a known scientific fact that you shed less when you do not have visible herpes symptoms for a long period of time. In other words, the fewer outbreaks you have, the less shedding symptomatic or asymptomatic days you will experience and of course the less likely you are to transmit herpes. There are more things you can do but I leave that to my book….

Is it too soon for the test to show up correctly? He said that he won’t want to stay married to me if he has it b/c he does not want to give it to me :( . Isn’t it doable?? I love him and we are trying to work things out. I don’t want to loose him. I think I freaked him out when I told him that if he gives it to me, then it would be a danger to any future babies. I guess I shouldn’t have said anything, but I was mad at the time so…..Oh! also, sorry, I know this is question 3, but what about vit D3? I get 4,000iu/da.

Nathalie Says: You need to wait at least 6 weeks before you/he can get a blood test. It seems you will have to deal with the hurt associated with cheating like any couple who goes through that. Herpes will not stop you from having babies. I explain all this in my book. Your husband must learn to protect himself from herpes and if he caught it to protect you from it. I stayed with the same man for almost 9 years and he never got herpes from me. It is possible. On a more personal level, please do not blame yourself. It was your husband’s doing and not your responsibility. It is normal for you to be in a state of shock.

I don’t use it internally though. I find other plants more potent against herpes . I love homeopathic remedies, nosodes included.

Why does taking lysine make me sick?

Nathalie Says: I think I was the first person to warn about the potential negative long-term effects of prolonged lysine intake. Please use lysine only for a few days not all the time. Arginine is an important amino acid and blocking its absorption for a long time may raise your body acid levels, hurt your muscles and your heart…

Does resveratrol help with herpes 2

Nathalie Says: Reservatol has been found to suppress herpes replication and block HSV DNA synthesis during early lab studies. However many things are able to do so in the lab but fail in humans. Unfortunately, I have not found animal studies that would confirm that reservatol is useful as a supplement. It seems that 25% reservatol cream was also able to prevent HSV-1 herpes outbreaks from causing any visible signs on the skin. Reservatol definitely has an interesting potential.
However, I know another supplement that can block herpes replication even more effectively and even though I have not found animal studies either, I have experienced it myself and received solid feedback about it. It can really help suppress herpes in the long term. Reservatol could be an interesting alternative for people with cancer though.

Does your new book address Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation? I read about it in a newsletter from a doctor, but I don’t know much about it. Also, does it discuss the topical use of garlic oil? Thanks for being helpful and thorough.

      Nathalie says:
Sorry but no. My books cover only easy solutions you can use at home without any machines or specific equipement. I will cover this in another book. It does discuss garlic but not garlic oil. Garlic oil can unnecessarily burn your skin. I do not recommend using garlic in this form. It is much safer to use the right combination of internal and external treatment. It will reduce the need for very strong external salves.

I do not get frequent major out breaks but do get singular blisters sometimes the size of a pin head on my butt and legs. I would really like to find ways of preventing those. If there are methods that will work on the bigger outbreaks can I assume that this is the case with these smaller frequent blisters?

      Nathalie Says:
Absolutely. It is a good thing that you are monitoring an area where you had previous herpes symptoms. This will greatly reduce your chances of transmitting herpes. It is possible to control herpes whether you have occasional large or frequent small blisters. It will take a little bit of your time at first but should take you less than 2 to 3 minutes a day after a few weeks if you are in good health condition.

Dear Nathalie, thank you SO much for all that you do!! I got HSV-2 in 2004 quit sure of this; caught husband (now ex!!) Cheating, forgave him slept with him 10 days later extreemly sick for a fw days already
Was atepting sex but hurt too bad inside vagina, went to doctor and it was herpes was denied but she did say “be glad it isn’t herpes, then you would probably kill your husband, ha!”. No explanation of anything to me. A year later a difrent doc., and again, no mention of herpies. Third blister (yes an “out berak” for me is one inner vagianl blister) I went to a thired doctor who did all the same tests, blood and culture and it came up possitive for HSVI 1 and 2. My first questian is: on my lab results it says “pos. HSV-1 = 17.5″ and “pos. HSV-2 = 1.2″ what do these scores mean?? Since I have only ever had three outbreaks genitaly it seems like I have a low number which points to a “mild” case. My second question is have you ever heard of a cooralation between core body heat or dehydration and an out break? Both my second and third case were after working long and very days in the So. Cal. Summer sun. And being dehydrated. My doctor is in his 80’s, just a small town clinic doc. And knows NOTHING about herpies! I had to tell him what to prescribe me and how much! (Valtrex) I just found this site today so hopefully I will be learning new things. The best so far is “I am not alone!!!” Still single four years later and hateing that I loose everyone after I tell them I am HSV pos.

Nathalie says: Waow so much to say… If both your PCR and blood tests came back positive you are certain that you have herpes. Roughly, blood tests results show the number of antigens, your immune response to the HSV, that are present in the blood stream.
If you know you have herpes when being dehydrated then you have discovered one of your triggers. This means you will need to take a natural preventive treatment before going to the sun each an every time or avoid dehydration at all costs. The sun is a well known trigger for oral herpes but I have not heard of anything like this for genital herpes until today.

About dating, I have received several testimonials of women who got married, dated men who learned they had herpes and did not reject them… Love is a wonderful thing. Herpes is never an issue when you know deep inside of you that you are lovable so give it a try and learn how to love yourself no matter what. After all, you cannot control how people feel about you but you can control how you feel about yourself. Try dating again. Avoiding rejection is not a long-term solution. Not so many people will reject you and you just need one yes. One last point, it is possible to remain several years with someone and never transmit herpes to them. I have done it. You just need to learn how to do it.
      Good luck and have fun!

In 1998, a doc told me that I had been exposed to HSV2 via blood test. However, the “initial” outbreak didn’t occur until 2008. Is it possible for a false positive on a blood test or is this just a case of some freak immune system? Thanks for your help and all you do.

Nathalie Says: Tests may not have been as reliable at the time as now. I would redo the test now and request an IgG specific test if you have any doubts. Today’s blood test false positive are very rare, usually less than 5%.

      Hi Nathalie~

      1) Do you have knowledge about traumatic brain injuries causing an increase in herpetic outbreaks? I have been so easily & heavily stressed since my TBI in 1989. I acquired herpes 2 in the year 2000. I have an outbreak almost every single day! Stress increases outbreaks, so to me — it makes sense as to why I cannot combat the outbreaks effectively. I take a ton of supplements and have been taking Valtrex for many years.

      2) Do you recommend certain immune boosters for those with severe cases of outbreaks–in terms of frequency? There are so many cites that recommend certain supplements and of course a lot of companies that want to sell immune supp’s or herpes meds.
I spends hundreds and hundreds and… of dollars per year on vit’s, Rxs, and supplements. I am a recent Univ. of Mich MA graduate in Special Education, but there are no jobs around here — just loans to repay. Thanks if you can direct me to the best way to spend my $$! And — also if you have any info. on #1 Thank you for all that you do !

Nathalie Says: anything causing long-term stress will make herpes symptoms worse. I think that first you have to make sure it is really herpes causing you those daily symptoms. Even if you have herpes that does not mean you cannot have anything else causing similar symptoms. When symptoms last for ever it usually is not herpes. If it is herpes, then it is best to try the formula I recommend and stick to it for several weeks.

It seems in your situation that you may have a great fear of herpes. It is difficult to say from a distance but I have noticed that people who had the most symptoms kept focusing on the disease the most. In that situation, the person needs to operate a mind shift before healing can occur. What you need to focus is on the possibility to heal and have perfect health. It may sound like silly advice but try this for two weeks. Each time you think about herpes or bad health, repeat in your mind “perfect health” or “my health is improving every day”. You will have of course to do more than that but it should give you a head start towards an outbreak free life.

She is the only person I have ever had sex with. Yesterday I had a sore start under the head of my penis. I researched penis sores and this very much looks like Herpes. I’ve had Herpes since ‘93 and have taken Valtrex off & on for years to treat & supress. I get ob on my lower spine, buttocks (crack) and sometimes outside of my genitals. Lately, the skin & nerve pain I experience is so severe I have a hard time with normal daily functioning. I know an ob is coming cause I get sore patches of skin on different places in my body, then shooting nerve pain down my leg(s) to the tips of my toes. I STILL experience flu-like symptoms after all these years! This week, I’ve suppressed the ob but have had sore, tingling skin on my hip, across my thigh accompanied with shooting joint pain. The pain feels deep into my left hip bone! It aches so bad I can’t lay on that side & it’s difficult to walk around. I know the ob wants to come – sometimes I wonder if I should just let it come on instead of trying to suppress it…maybe afterward I’ll get relief!? Does anyone out there experience constipation & headaches along with ob’s? Is this from the high dosage of Valtrex or from the disease itself? Does anyone else experience what I describe here? I feel alone in this!

When I have an outbreak, can the outbreak be transferred to other parts of my body? Can my clothes transfer the outbreak to other parts of my body?

      thanks.

      Nathalie Foy says:
Resolve herpes does not appear to be serious. You cannot make such strong claims without sufficient data proving efficiency. Reading from other people’s blog, it seems to be another scam trying to get as much money out of the herpes community as possible and a big disappointment to those who have bought it.

Your clothes will not transfer herpes to other parts of your body unless you wear them wet and rub from one spot to the other. I will have a new video on-line about reinfecting yourself. Watch my herpes question videos for more info.

Hi, Natalie… Thank you so much for your amazing book. My wife and I are very curious: How is it possible to be in a long-term, monogamous relationship and then suddenly experience a primary outbreak? We had been exclusive with one another for over a year, never having had any “problems” before, when suddenly an outbreak and positive diagnosis occurred. (We’ve read several similar anecdotes, with some couples even experiencing their primary outbreak 10 or more years into a monogamous relationship). Curious as to what science and research say to this point. Thanks!

      Nathalie Says:

You’re welcome. About 80% of people with herpes don’t know they have it and about 20% of them never have symptoms. That is why sometimes even if two members are perfectly loyal to one another, one of the partners starts getting symptoms after several months or years. This only means that one of the partners has transmitted herpes to the other without being aware of his/her condition. Of course, this could also indicate that one of the partners has been unfaithful and that possibility hurts the other partner even more. Nonetheless, it can and does happen to perfectly loyal partners because herpes can remain undiagnosed for years.

I too was a victim of constant out breaks of hsv2. I found that yes chocolate is a big trigger and Lysine or Lysine + does not equal it out. I did cut out the chocolate and I take Lysine (3pills) once a day on an empty stomach. My dr told me that instead of doing 5 pills 5x a day of Acyclovir, take 2 pills = 400mg, 3x a day for three days. Its a stronger punch, and you dont have to take it for that many days. what i have found out it that all these herpes meds are released through our kidneys. so it vital that we drink a lot of water. stay away from soda and peanuts too. peanuts is also a huge trigger. i hope some of this is helpful to you.

Hi, I have both genital herpes (caused by HSV 2) AND cold sores (cause by HSV 1). I am going crazy from the recurrent episodes for both types. Its so bad that I can get cold sores twice in a week. I take 400mg of acyclovir once the symptoms start for the cold sores (i.e. prodome stage) but I do not take it for the 5 days required. Just enough to see the symptoms disappear, which is usually in a day or two. My question is thus, will not taking the medication acyclovir 800mg for the 5 times per day for 5 days as indicated create some form of resistance of the herpes virus to the medication? Second question is, as I really love chocolate (and I know its a trigger) can I counteract the effects of chocolate by taking L-Lysine supplements? If so much much do I take such that it does not harm my body? Thank you so much!

Have certain supplements become a permanent feature in your life and do the same supplements work for HSV-I and HSV-II?

      Nathalie Says:
This is a tough question. I do take a supplement once a month but I will take more depending on the period. I have developed my own routine that seems to work very well. My top remedy is homeopathy but no remedy is a cure by itself. Most people miss the point trying to find the one remedy that works best. It is the right combination of remedies that you must find.
I think that some remedies are more specific for HSV-1 and others for HSV-2. Actually, this is confirmed by scientific research. I give that information in my book Herpes Wise that will be soon renamed Herpes Antidote.

May I suggest you listen to the teleseminar available on this blog to get extra information.

Do you recommend a highly restrictive diet (e.g., not even moderate alcohol, no dairy etc.)?

This depends whether you are in a period where you are prone to outbreaks. If you are very close to having one very mild itching, flu like symptoms then a very strict diet is necessary for at least two weeks but I do drink wine, eat chocolate and even have a pizza once in a while.

And, may these eventually spread to other parts of my body including buttocks, stomach, breasts (as I have seen pictures of outbreaks in these areas).

You don’t want the best but the right for you. I recommend a combination of remedies not just one remedy. My favorite is a nosode but it does not work alone.

HOw is possible to concieve a baby when you seem to always have an outbreak, and are to not have intercourse during an outbreak?

I guess it is not if you do not want to infect your partner. It seems you need to control herpes first. Depending on your health condition you should be able to fully suppress herpes within 6 months naturally. Homeopathy is wonderful and can help you but needs to be combined with diet and lifestyle changes….

Also you need to first get rid of yeast infection, parasites and hormonal imbalances if present. These along with sleep deprivation, long-term stress and relationship problems can make herpes very hard to stop.

Most women who suffer from very frequent outbreaks have some form of parasite or fungi proliferation.

Herpes can cause blisters filled with pus that can be confused with some form of acne but they feel much more like blisters. I would not think boils are related to herpes but it is hard to tell from a distance.

is there any way to figure out how long I have had herpes?

If you had a blood test no. If you had some form of swab or culture test maybe. If your viral culture or PCR test is positive and your blood test is negative, this means you acquired herpes less than 6 weeks ago.

learn how to become asymptomatic because the fewer symptoms you have, the less likely you are to transmit herpes.
learn to recognize times you are more likely to go through asymptomatic shedding
learn real solid facts about herpes transmission
use a certain lubricant that is likely to reduce your risk of transmitting herpes.

      Hi,

I contracted the herpes virus 5 years ago and my first year was pretty unbearable. However, over the past 4 years I have had maybe one or two outbreaks. About 3 weeks ago I had an MRI for some back pain and found out that I herniated my L5 S1 disc and was told to quit working out until the bulge resolved itself, and if it hasn’t resolved itself in 4 months I will need surgery. I also started a new job and a new birth control one month ago.

1 week ago I had itching, tingling, and a bump. I increased my daily Lysine supplement and made an appt with my doctor to get Valtrex. However, 3 days ago a full blown outbreak started and I also started my period. I have 6 major ulcers/lesions on my vagina and it is extremely red and swollen. I cannot urinate without crying, cannot walk, and have had to call in sick to work. This outbreak is worse than my initial outbreak 5 years ago.

      My questions are:

      1. I know that the herpes virus lies dormant in the base of the spine. Could the herniation of my L5 S1 (which is at the base of my spine) caused the virus to “wake up”?
      2. I know that the stress of my new job, the birth control, my period and the lack of exercise certainly contributed to my outbreak, but is it normal for a recurrent outbreak to be worse than the initial outbreak, and is it normal for the lesions/ulcers to be so large that they cover your entire vagina?

      Nathalie Says:
      1. I know that the herpes virus lies dormant in the base of the spine. Could the herniation of my L5 S1 (which is at the base of my spine) caused the virus to “wake up”?
      I don’t think so.
      2. Recurrent outbreaks can be much worse than the first one, yes. This was the case for me at first.

Lesions should not cover the entire vagina. If it is the case, you may have something else present like a yeast infection for example.

I do not take birth control because it makes my leg veins too painful. Hormonal changes can cause herpes to become active. I would have to take a closer look at the matter but I believe that birth control can influence herpes outbreak severity and frequency by changing estrogen and prostaglandin levels whether directly or not.

Stress can alter your hormonal balance and cause vitamin and mineral deficiency, cause lack of sleep… After a certain time stress can promote outbreaks.
If I were you I would start some sort of daily running. Running or cardio-training can really help lower your stress levels if you do it at least half an hour 3 times a week but you can start at 10 minutes every day, anything that seems achievable. I like to run and jump on a small rebounder because it protects my veins and my joints but you can choose any exercise of your liking.

There are many more things you can do to put herpes to sleep. I just don’t have the space to explain it all here. However you seem to be in a lot of pain and I wish you to get better soon.

      Nathalie says:
      Hello Yovani,

You have to take this matter seriously and tell your doctor immediately.
Women who get herpes 4 weeks before delivery are at the greatest risks of transmitting
      herpes to their newborn babies.

This means you cannot have physical contact with her within at least 8 weeks
      before delivery.
The immune system needs at least 6 weeks to create an immune response to the virus.

For safety reasons, I would not have physical contact with her from now on
      until delivery.
You must take this matter very seriously. It is very important she should discuss this with her doctor.

I suppose that if I have to narrow it down to only two questions, they would be as follows…
I have tried nearly everything that I have found that looks promising (short of prescription meds, I prefer natural remedies), and I have also researched this virus quite extensively. So far nothing has proven to be 100% effective, in fact, it seems as though everything only begins to work for a short amount of time, and then outbreaks still persist, with similar severity each time. I feel like improper diet is the major cause of my outbreaks, but there are two conflicting dieting techniques that I have been looking into…1-high Lysine diet, and 2-high alkaline diet. Which of these is better, and how long should it take for my body to effected by the diet.
My other question is, is there a number one topical product that you would recommend, because I am finding that I am never one of the ’success stories’ you read about in the product testimonials?

      Thanks.

I have a kind of mold in my body (similar to yeast) that causes vaginal soreness, itching, and anal fissures. The severity varies, but it seems to be a somewhat constant issue which makes it difficult to detect an outbreak of the herpes before a lesion appears. I am working with a naturopath to treat both mold and virus issues, making diet changes, taking super lysene plus and getting acupuncture. Any suggestions?

It could be herpes. If your symptoms keep coming back at the same spot, you have a fair chance it is herpes. It is impossible to diagnose herpes through the Internet though. If you don’t trust your doctor’s judgment, please consult another one or better get a blood test. Avoiding peanuts and chocolate is a good idea but won’t be enough. Hi,
Thanks for your time. I was diagnosed with genital HSV 1 about a month ago. I don’t know where I got it. I’m 56 years old, I’ve been single for 3 years and I’m sexually active. The pain and discomfort were really bad but I started taking Valtrex and everything seemed to heal in about 2 weeks. I had sex with my partner and within a couple of days I began to experience itching. I thought it was irritation from the condom because I have really sensitive skin, but I think now it was a prodrome. We had sex again the following weekend and now I have a full blown outbreak. This time it was not in any way as bad as the first. I guess like everyone else, I want to know if I can eliminate the outbreaks? But I also want to know if you think I may have had sex too soon? I want to protect my partner, if it isn’t already too late. And I would also like to know if there is any safe time for oral sex without protection? Is that three questions? Sorry about that.

Some chaparral extracts can hurt the liver for example. That’s why it is important you choose SAFE supplements to treat and prevent herpes. I give clear instructions in my book Herpes Wise on which natural treatment to use, what is 100% safe and what is borderline.

Some supplements recommended for herpes are very dangerous and no one should use them. I feel really sad that some people seem ready to use anything to get rid of herpes even if it ends up causing them even more health problems.

I feel like most naturopaths when it comes to treating herpes.

Verify that it is safe first and then if it is effective.

That being said, you are unique and you may experience side-effects where no one else does. It is also important to tell your doctor about all the supplements you’re taking, especially if you are being treated for a chronic condition. An herb or supplement may interfere with medication. That’s why it is always good to keep monitoring your health while using a natural treatment.

A couple of things have changed in my life recently and i believe them to my possible triggers. Im not sure about the first one(it may sound a bit silly but i thought i’d run it by you to see what you think?)…I was given an xbox for christmas and i really do get into some of the games to the point that i get goose bumps and sweaty palms..lol..so im thinking this isnt good and could be a trigger.
The other change in my life which is a bigger facter is my partner and i are going through a real rough patch at the moment, With regular arguments but recently i think i read something on website about controlling your temper and trying to be more carm. Which i have been putting to practise and touch wood i think it may be helping control my outbreaks. :)

Hi Nathalie, i’v had herpes now for almost nine years. I am currently 32. My first ever outbreaks were weekly. I was treated with acciclovir for 12 months. This treatment was very affective at suppressing my outbreaks. Once coming off the treatment obviously they returned but more controlled and i was able to go two or three months between them. Which i could live with but this year my outbreaks seem to have gone crazy, just like my first ever outbreaks. They now have gone back to being weekly. My diet is still the same. It is high in protein, as i do weight training but it always has been. Why the sudden change?. Has the virus just found a new way to get past my ammun system. Have you experienced this or heard of any similar patterns like this before.

      Nathalie Says :

      Hello Ben,

Stress can do this sometimes. Did you move, get married, changed jobs, loose someone? These situations can cause long-term stress which is a major herpes promoting factor.
If you take a lot of meat protein, it will be harder for you to keep herpes under control, especially if you have another trigger like long-term stress being active.

It may be something else but yes several people who were experiencing the same thing as you did contacted me.

If you exercise too much, your immune system stops functioning normally. You can research this. I have and I can tell you that excessive exercise can also contribute to increase the severity of outbreaks. This is something to consider if you are an athlete.
The right supplementation along with the right remedies should give you enough support to remain symptoms free though.

jo: I had one bad outbreak and thought I was gong to get another but I never got the sores – my gential area really hurt for about one week though. Sometimes when I am tired my genital area throbs and I take a whole bunch of vitamin c for a couple of days and get enough rest and it goes away without me getting the sores. Can I still give HPV 2 to others if I don’t get the sores?

      Nathalie says:

There are times when you have herpes on your skin without any visible symptoms like blisters or redness. At that time you can transmit herpes.
Vitamin C and rest is a good idea.

I have recently started dating a woman who has HBV-2. I am an HBV-2 negative male. what would you recommend for someone starting to enter a relationship with someone with herpes? Also, are there oral outbreaks possible for HBV-2, more specifically if I engage in oral sex with someone with HBV-2 (obviously not during an outbreak) is there a risk I can contract HBV-2 as oral herpes and mouth lesions?

      Nathalie says:

I’m a bit confused. Do you mean HSV-2? HSV-2 oral herpes happens in less than 1% of times. If I remember correctly, the probability of ever getting a cold sore from HSV-2 is 0.01%. It is so rare that my gynecologist who has worked all her life treating STDs admitted that it was a big event in her hospital to encounter a case of HSV-2 oral herpes. You can find research on the subject on the University of Washington website.

Have you seen the website, resolveherpes.com ? this is a 48 day homeopathic mineral detox that claims to rid your body of herpes completely and states to take pre and post blood work to prove it? It almost sounds too good to be true. Is it worth the 300$?

Nathalie says: I’m not going to tell you much about it. I do not know and I would stay away from it. Last time someone told me he had found a $300 cure, he only got cured of the $300 in his pocket. I have seen so many companies claim that fine treatment was the cure. This was false. If you want to try another supposedly miracle cure why don’t you try MMS (miracle mineral solution). At least, it is more affordable. I do not know much about it either but I’m looking into it.

As far as blood tests are concerned, once the body has created antigens against a certain pathogen, here herpes, it doesn’t stop producing it so I wonder what miracle proof they got out of their hat. Even if antigen concentration is low, this doesn’t prove you have been cured.

Could he have given me herpes and if so why is he completely fine?

      Nathalie Says:

      Dear Sasha,

About 70% to 80% of people who have herpes are not aware of it and about 20% of them never experience symptoms. If blisters are present you should ask your doctor to do a swab test to check if you have herpes. Your boyfriend should also get a herpes blood test. It is too early for you get one now though.

Hi, I have HSV1 genital but have bad recurrences. My doctor told me that my body will build up some immunity against it but at the moment it is ruining my life so ive began taking suppressive therapy. Does taking antivirals affect my body building immunity against herpes? Please answer. Thank you.

      Nathalie Says:

The long-term impact of suppressive therapy is uncertain as most studies don’t go beyond a year. Suppressive therapy will not build your immunity against herpes. It suppresses herpes from replicating. As soon as you stop taking it, you are likely to shed herpes as you did before. However, it is true that most people tend to have fewer symptoms with time. If this is not your case and you’re concerned about medical treatment side-effects, I suggest you read my book Herpes Wise and learn how to prevent herpes naturally.

I don’t know if I can do it, it totally sucks and will be so embarressing. I would never not tell the next person I am with that I am HSV 2 positive. I have not been with anyone sine the last jerk I was with gave me herpes. I feel like my whole love life is over. If it was turned around and I was clean and was told that the person I was about to sleep with had herpes I know that I probably would not risk it, so I don’t see how anyone is ever going to want to be with me unless with a miracle they say “that’s ok I have herpes too” that will never happen. I’m just very depressed about the whole thing. SOmetimes I don’t even know why I’m dating since I’m not gonna have the balls to tell him I have herpes and I’m not going to sleep with him either.

I believe I have recently acquired herpes from my husband of 22 years. I think that because I am post menopausal that my vaginal tissues were more susceptible to the virus. Since this is my first infection, I have been suffering greatly. I have genital, anal and urethral swelling. I also have labial varicose veins, which I had during pregancy 21 years ago. I have difficulty urinating and defecating. There are no lesions. I also have tingling and pain down my legs, nausea and low grade fever. After 2 weeks I finally got on the anti viral medication acyclovir. It is beginning to work about 4 days later. I am worried about subsequent infections. How bad will they be?

I have been in a monogomous relationship with my girlfrend for nine months now. Several weeks ago I noticed several red bumps on the head of my penis along with discoloration on the base of my penis. I have not went to the doctor, but I am pretty confident that it is a herpes outbreak. Both of us have been tested for STDs before we engaged in sexual intercourse with each other. I am almost positive that she is not cheating on me. What is your take on the situation?

      Nathalie Foy says :
Did you take a blood test? Maybe you or your girlfriend had a short romance before within 3 to 4 meeting each other. Blood tests detect antibodies (body reaction to herpes antigens). It takes some time for the body to create them and in that time frame someone can be infected with herpes and yet test negative.

I just found out that i have herpes about 1 month ago because i thought i had a yeast infection. I got 1 sore and it went away but, my discharge is still weird. It’s like wet tissue paper and then sometimes jelly-like. Does that mean I’m still contagious or what does it even mean?

Right now I’m taking Super Lysine, Cat’s claw, vitamin-e, multi-vitamin, calcium & magnesium, and acidophilous plus exercise and water. I haven’t got another out break yet. Is there anything that I need to change or add to my world of vitamins?

      Nathalie Foy says :

I think you may have both. Did you visit a doctor? Yeast infection can make herpes symptoms worse or can make a silent herpes infection become noticeable. I would say, you need a proper diagnosis. The internet is not a goo place for this. One thing is absolutely certain though, you must avoid sodas, sugar, refined wheat flour produces, caffeine for a while.

Herpes is transmitted from skin to skin. Valtrex doesn’t cut all the risks of transmitting herpes. If his skin comes in contact with yours and herpes is present, there is a chance he will get herpes from you.
However if you pay close attention to your symptoms and have sex when you don’t feel anything you have fewer chances to transmit herpes. You will have to learn how to increase awareness of the mildest symptoms and pay attention to what triggers herpes. It may be stress, anxiety, PMS… Avoid sexual contact when those triggers are present and you feel a tingle or flu like symptoms or anything you already felt during an outbreak.

Ann: lysine should not be used on a regular basis as it lowers your overall adatogenic immune response. It is useful, 500mg, 3xs a day (usual rec) at first sign of symptoms e.g. tingling sensation, nerve-like pain, burning, etc. Lemon balm is an anti-viral herb that is easy to find and can be taken as a tea or tincture daily as a nirvine and as a preventative. If an outbreak occurs, rub dragon’s blood resin (from tree sap, found at health food stores) or try diluted lavender essential oil (directly on sores/blisters). Epsom salt baths are great too as are deep breaths.

      Nathalie Foy’s reply:
Thank you very much from this information. However from the scientific information I have gathered, lysine is much more likely to be effective for prevention than treatment. I sometimes suggest taking l-lysine for a few months until other remedies like homeopathic treatments become fully effective.

There is a form of lavender essential oil that works really well on herpes. It’s called aspic lavender. It’s harder to find and a bit on the harsh side but its effectiveness has been demonstrated in Germany.

Hi Nathalie, I would like to share what happened to me because I think it should not have. I was taking Valtrex for 7 days, did not get any better, had severe pain and itching, contacted my doctor who told me to refill the medicine and that I was getting better, but two days later I had allergic reaction to Valtrex. I took benadryl for three days which cured everything but the ongoing yeast infection I got from the Valtrex ontop of the herpes. I am still miserably itchy and my doctor only says,”buy yeast medication, if that doesn’t work come back”. I think this is the lamest thing I have ever heard. If I didn’t feel bad about having the herpes before now I feel REALLY BAD. What is your opinion? does this happen to other women?

      Hello Herb,

I started writing for people with genital herpes but as both oral herpes and genital herpes can be caused by either HSV-1 or HSV-2, the information I give is valid for both.

The only difference is that oral herpes requires more discreet topical treatment.
In your situation, i.e. not too many symptoms, I would suggest you try homeopathy.
There are a lot of things you can do to prevent symptoms, the first one being paying attention to what happens before symptoms. Was it stress, menstruation, certain types of foods, an emotion like anger or guilt, anxiety, fatigue, sun exposure…that triggered the infection?

I give a lot of clues in the audio recording of my teleconference. I suggest you listen to it.

Hi, both my partner and I have herpes. We have unprotected sex and me being the male receive little red “marks” on my penis that take 6 or so weeks to disappear. They are not traditional outbreaks- I average about 1 of those per year and they are severe and excrete. These are simply little “flecks” on the surface of the skin. My partner shows no symptons at all but she is positive. Is there any way of having unprotected sex with her and not contracting these little red flecks on my penis? Its no big deal, its just that I’de prefer not to look at it all the time.

1)Is it possible to have swab and blood tests come back as a false negative

False negative swab tests are common. However positive swab tests are extremely rare.

      2) Is is safe to give oral sex to a woman if I’m shedding or in outbreak (genital herpes)or is the virus in my saliva and non-genital skin as well?

Herpes is in your skin and nerve cells, not your saliva. The problem with oral sex is that you can catch oral herpes from genital herpes or give genital herpes with oral herpes.

Are you sure you don’t have oral herpes and that your partner doesn’t have genital herpes? If so I don’t see why not.

It is usually impossible to know for 100% sure because blood tests only tell you that the virus is in your body not where. If you have HSV-2 genital herpes, you should be on the safer side though.

      kate: Hello Kate,
It is true that not everybody has to change their diet but it often helps people with severe symptoms or constant recurrences.

I know someone who had an outbreak only once in her life. I talk to people who never do but still test positive.
It all depends on your situation, your age, other conditions you might have and your immune system.

For example, women who tend to have herpes outbreaks during PMS or menstruation should watch their diet at that time.

This is quite precise. There has been a study suggesting that the severity of symptoms is genetically inherited. Another study tries to explain why some people have a lot of outbreaks and others don’t with the variation of natural killer cells activity among people. NKC are part of the immune system…

You should feel very lucky to have been blessed with extremely rare outbreaks.

Is there an African strain that is different from say, a North American strain? I’ve never heard of it, but I wonder, because I think my symptoms are worse than what I usually read about from other people. I know it’s largely from my own stress levels and diet, but I’ve had 4 outbreaks in the last month!! One started immediately as another one was ending. Is it possible that there are tropical strains that are more virulent than those from temperate climates?

Hello Angela, sorry to hear about your situation. There are two scenarios which you should consider:

1: If you are asymptomatic ie, you do not have symptoms or get outbreaks, you may experience what is called asymptomatic shedding. During this period, you are contagious as the virus is active and on the surface of the skin. It is hard to know when asymptomatic people are shedding, as they do not experience the telltale symptoms. Those people need to be in tune with their bodies and look for subtle signs/triggers. When you are not shedding, you should not e contagious. Asymptomatic people can experience three to four periods of “shedding” per year. If you are asymptomatic, follow Nathalie’s recommendations on proper diet, supplements, rest and mental attitude, to decrease the number of incidents of shedding.

2: You get outbreaks, hence you experience symptoms. As soon as you feel any of the symptoms, you are prodrome and hence contagious. You should not partake in sexual activity until you have completely cleared from having symptoms/outbreaks. After the symptoms have gone and the outbreak has cleared, the virus goes into what is called a “dormant” state and you should no longer be contagious.
There is no evidence to suggest that using condoms during prodrome or shedding periods will 100% protect your partner from becoming infected. It is recommended to desist from sexual activity during these times.

How can you prevent transmission even without the use of condoms? (in a serious and monogamous relationship)

      2) Is it true that with time, the virus decreases in strength therefore decreases outbreaks and risk of transmission?

Thank you so much Nathalie, all information is appreciated and listened to.

I was diagnosed with genital herpes 6 weeks ago. I feel like I’m constantly in the prodrome phase. I’m now down to 2 Valtrex a day (2 grams), but if I try to reduce my dosage even by a 1/2 of a pill, my nerve pain comes back with a vengeance! I’ve never had any blisters, just terrible nerve pain across my genitals, down my legs and also in my feet and sometimes hands! I’ve started on high dosages of Red Marine Algae and Lyceine. My depression about this whole thing is really starting to sink in. Even at 2 pills a day, my nerve pain will keep me awake at night. Everyone talks about this prodrome phase, but I feel like it’s ALWAYS with me. I am going to order your book.

Avoid a lot of chocolate, peanut butter, caffeine, sodas, sugars, nuts as these things aggravate it and get some sleep. Sleep helps repair the body and will help you to keep it dormant.

I have him douse himself in rubbing alcohol (70%)before we have sex (every time), and since this kills germs, I was wondering if this will protect me from getting it? Wouldn’t the alcohol kill any herpes viruses that are on the skin? And, of course, we avoid sex completely if he is having an outbreak until he’s healed.
